Humanistic and Cognitive Behavioural Counselling
This combined approach helps you identify and
express your feelings in order to start to make sense of the issues you
bring to counselling. The thinking behind your behaviour is explored.
Goals are discussed :
- what are the assumptions and core beliefs
you want to work on ?
- what are your expectations and how are
they to be met ?
- what choices do you want to make ?
- what changes do you want to come about ?
Between sessions, you are encouraged to reflect,
and to work on the goals agreed with your counsellor, e.g., you might keep a
diary of your thoughts and moods or try to change one aspect of the
way you do things and to record any new behaviour to discuss at your
next appointment. Counselling makes it easier for you to express your
feelings; helps to replace unproductive ways of thinking with more positive
ideas and shows you how to learn ways of coping with, or changing, whatever
is hindering your personality, self regard and relationships.
Counselling enables you:
- to start to understand yourself more
- to set achievable goals
-
to modify/ change whatever is affecting
your self esteem
Counselling is about:
- Self Healing It includes talking and
listening but is chiefly about learning
to develop as a person and/or to acquire ways
of coping.
- Counselling may take
place for one or more than one session,
depending on initial consultation. A client is free to finish counselling at any time, but it is expected that any booked session is cancelled at least 48 hours in advance.
- A
counselling session lasts for about an hour, but it is possible to have
a briefer session (for cost or other reasons)
or a longer one.
- Crisis
counselling is available and generally means
it is helpful for a client to be seen twice
or three times in a week.
-
Most problems may be helped by counselling
but a client is always told when she or he would
be better to go elsewhere for therapy.
Relationship counselling is available:
- Usually a couple come together, but circumstances may
mean only one partner is able to commit to
counselling.
- Individuals who've been helped by
counselling often recommend it to a friend, colleague or
lovedone. They even pay for a session or two,
as a gift to the person whom they know will also
benefit. An
idea for Christmas/ New Year's/ birthdays !
